Why batch import beats making cards one at a time
You finished a book. You have 40 words scribbled in the margins, saved in a vocabulary app, or sitting in your Kindle's Vocabulary Builder. Now you need Anki cards for all of them.
Making cards one at a time means 40 separate lookups, 40 copy-pastes, 40 rounds of formatting. Most people give up around word 8. The words stay in a list and never make it into a review session.
Batch import solves this. Paste your entire list, and Wordwise looks up every word, picks the right definition for the sentence you found it in, and builds a complete Anki card for each one. You review the results, deselect anything you do not want, and export the whole batch in one click.
The same context-aware lookups from the Wordwise browser dictionary power every card. Include the original sentence with each word and you get a definition that matches how the word was actually used, not a generic dictionary entry.

Where your word lists come from
Kindle Vocabulary Builder
Your Kindle saves every word you look up while reading. Copy the words (with sentences for better cards) and paste them here. For details, see exporting Kindle Vocabulary Builder to Anki.
Textbook or course vocabulary
Type or paste the vocabulary list from a chapter. Add example sentences from the textbook for context-aware definitions instead of generic ones.
Words from reading online
Collected words while reading articles or forums? Paste them all at once instead of looking them up individually. For real-time lookups while you read, use the Wordwise browser dictionary to create cards as you go.
Frequency lists and vocabulary targets
Studying from a top-1000 or JLPT/HSK/DELE list? Paste a chunk and Wordwise builds the cards. Run another batch for the next chunk.
One batch, multiple languages
Mix languages in a single list. Wordwise auto-detects each word and defines it in whatever language you choose.
Batch import FAQ
How many words can I import at once?
Each batch handles up to 50 words. If your list is longer, run another batch for the rest. There is no limit on how many batches you can run.
What format does the word list need to be in?
One word per line. If you have the sentence you found a word in, add it after the word separated by a dash or tab. Context is optional but gives you better definitions. For example: perfunctory — She gave the report a perfunctory glance.
Can I import words from Kindle's Vocabulary Builder?
Yes. Copy the words from your Kindle's Vocabulary Builder (with or without the sentences) and paste them here. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see how to export Kindle Vocabulary Builder to Anki.
What languages are supported?
Wordwise supports 22 languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and more. It auto-detects the language and can define words in your native language. See the full list on the Anki dictionary page.
Do I need Anki installed to use batch import?
No. You can download your cards as a .txt file and import them into Anki whenever you like. If Anki is running with AnkiConnect, cards go straight to your deck in one click.
Is batch import free?
Batch import uses the same lookups as the rest of Wordwise. Every new account starts with a 7-day free trial, no credit card needed. English-to-English lookups are free forever. See pricing for details.
